Entry-Level Pitmasters Get a Shot at Memphis in May Through the Carriage Crossing Cookout

A September 19 contest in Collierville is giving newer cooks a direct path toward the 2027 World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest.

Competition barbecue can be difficult to enter when the same names seem to appear at major events year after year. Memphis in May is trying a more direct on-ramp this month with the Carriage Crossing Cookout, an event built specifically for entry-level pitmasters.

The event is September 19 in Collierville

The official event page lists the Carriage Crossing Cookout for Saturday, September 19, 2026, at Carriage Crossing in Collierville, Tennessee. The competition is intended for cooks age 18 or older who are still considered entry-level.

The eligibility language is designed to keep the field accessible: entrants cannot already have won a major food competition or a single-event prize valued above $1,500.

The prize can put a new team on a major stage

The grand prize includes an automatic paid entry into the 2027 Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest in the Patio Porkers division, valued by the organizer at $625, or a $500 cash prize. The winner is also offered a guaranteed spot connected to the Barbecue Country television show, subject to the program's separate audition, release and availability requirements.

That makes the cookout more than a local trophy chase. It is structured as a bridge into a much larger competition ecosystem.

Why this matters for newer pitmasters

The World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest attracts experienced teams from around the country and beyond. A contest focused on entry-level cooks gives newer teams a place to learn competition timing, turn-ins, pressure and event logistics without beginning against an unrestricted championship field.

A different kind of barbecue development pipeline

Barbecue culture grows when there is a path between backyard enthusiasm and organized competition. Classes, judging programs and small contests all help, but a feeder event with a direct prize tied to a major championship makes that path unusually visible.

The Pit Culture takeaway

For aspiring competitors, the Carriage Crossing Cookout is worth watching because it turns the idea of 'maybe competing someday' into a defined next step. For fans, it is also a chance to see which newer pitmasters may be moving onto a bigger stage in 2027.
